Each year the ESP Network puts on an amazing training conference for Eclipse users, usually in Las Vegas. We recruit the best trainers in the business, many of whom have been with us since the beginning. On Friday and Saturday we'll feature over ten hours of CART/Captioning-, beginner-, intermediate-, and advanced-level Eclipse training, mixed in with a few other short seminars on topics like SearchMaster and Dictionary Jumpstart.

Sunday's agenda includes a range of topics on Eclipse and other subjects of interest for our users. Jeremy Thorne and Keith Vincent will present a seminar called Taking Control of Your Translation and Steve Kosmata will cover Automatic Indexing. Also available on Sunday will be our technology track, which is perfect for those of you needing a little break from all the Eclipse goodness OR for our guests that are not using the Eclipse software. This technology track will include seminars on Windows 8, Live Note and a session on social messaging trends and text message best practices. Sunday is also the day for Sneak Peaks at what's next in future versions of Eclipse, and believe us when we say there is a LOT of cool stuff on the horizon!

But it's not all work. On Saturday evening we throw our annual reception with delicious appetizers, and a more importantly, the raffle drawing for all those fantastic prizes (think iPads and Kindles). Plus, it's Vegas, baby! What better place to learn Eclipse and take some time to relax and enjoy some beautiful Spring weather?

Expanded Schedule

TWO DAYS OF ECLIPSE TRACK TRAINING, FRIDAY & SATURDAY

If you want some intense, how-to, hands-on training, this is just the ticket. And no one does it better than Jan, Keith, Jeremy, Deanna & Jennifer. Over ten hours of training in two days.

Eclipse Basic Training Track
By Jan Fuller

Friday and Saturday, 1.05 CEUs
Writers for this class are OPTIONAL
Starting with an overview of User settings, Jan will explain the wheres and whys of setting up Eclipse to match your needs. Then she'll move through all the steps needed to produce a transcript: reading notes, translating them, using dictionaries, and editing. She’ll visit the Edit, Document, Paragraph, and Realtime tabs as she guides you through the process. If you’ve just recently purchased Eclipse or if you’re still feeling like there are a lot of basics you don’t understand, this is the class for you.

Eclipse Intermediate Training Track
By Keith Vincent

Friday and Saturday, 1.05 CEUs
Writers for this class are OPTIONAL
Keith will open with AutoMagic, which some call the “teacher feature” because it helps users move around in Eclipse with such ease. He’ll spend time on the many display controls in Eclipse too, showing you how to optimize your screen no matter what its size. Then it’s on to Translation Magic and the various other features that will improve your accuracy rate in Eclipse. That sets the table for in-depth coverage of macros and he’ll finish up with realtime, paying special attention to Auto brief, audiosynch, and output to Bridge. Throughout the training, he'll show you the new features and changes in soon-to-be-released Eclipse 6.

Eclipse Advanced Training Track
By Jeremy Thorne

Friday and Saturday, 1.05 CEUs
Writers for this class are OPTIONAL
Jeremy Thorne is the mastermind behind Eclipse. And he is just putting the finishing touches on new Eclipse v6, set to be released early this year. In it he introduces Connection Magic, a new feature that automatically connects Eclipse to a dedicated server out in the Cloud. This makes all kinds of innovative things possible, including keyless operation of the software and brutally simple Internet connections between reporters and scopists or between reporters and their clients. So buckle up and join Jeremy as he covers Connection Magic and all the other new things in his latest version of the software, new Total Eclipse 6.

Eclipse CART/Captioning: A Soup To Nuts Guidebook
By Deanna Baker, RMR, FAPR, & Jennifer Schuck, RDR, CCP, CBC

Friday and Saturday, 1.05 CEUs
Writers for this class are SUGGESTED
Just Added: Jen & Deanna will be demonstrating the YouTube Live Captioning feature, new in Eclipse 6.
Captioning and CART have come a long way and offer new career opportunities for court reporters. This track is an excellent choice for those who are interested in learning how to become captioners or CART providers, as well as those who already are but want to learn more. Jennifer Schuck will be presenting the CART track and she’ll cover topics like: recognizing who the consumers are, the ethics of CART, the various formats and tools used in Eclipse for on-site and remote CART work, and interacting with third-party vendors such as Streamtext, Speche, and Stenocast. During the captioning portion of the track Deanna Baker will review the Eclipse settings needed for AccuCap, creating multiple user (.ini) and phonebook (.phb ) files, as well as sending captioning data to multiple locations. She’ll also share many tricks of the trade gained over more than two decades of captioning.

Passing NCRA Certifications
By Marybeth Everhart, National Marketing Manager, Realtime Coach, RPR, CRI, CLR

9:45 – 10:45 a.m. • .1 CEUs
Let’s face it. Those initials behind our names mean more than just another name-tag ribbon! They mean, at least, that:

  • We are highly capable professionals who have paid the price for professional recognition
  • We have more clout and can demand higher rates for our work
  • We care about constant learning and refined skills—we’re ready!
So how do we prep for and pass the certification skills tests? Marybeth will demonstrate the slick new NCRA online skills testing process, share valuable tips and hints with proven preparation processes, and provide crucial test day patterns for success. You can do it! And Marybeth will show you how. She’ll have you cheering (not swearing) when you hear: “Ready? Begin!” Reality Check: The next tests are in May, right after the ESP Network Conference, so if you’re taking those tests, you should consider this seminar.

Concurrent Morning Sessions (Choose 1 of 3)

Taking Control, Part 1: How To Get Better Translation Results in Eclipse
By Jeremy Thorne & Keith Vincent

10:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. • .2 CEUs
Writers for this class are OPTIONAL
Look at it this way: The basic idea of a CAT translator is that you write steno and the software takes that and produces text. Simple, right? It's the essential concept behind every CAT program. But consider all of the systems that come into play in that process, and remember that users have tremendous control over each and every step in the process when using Eclipse, beginning with the steno machine, on through the connection interface to the translator and the decisions it makes, the actions taken by the dictionary entries, and then the final decisions by the software. Jeremy and Keith are going to show you how all these moving parts affect your tran rates and what you can do to improve your accuracy.

Automatic Indexing in Total Eclipse, Part 1
By Steve Kosmata

10:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. • .2 CEUs
Writers for this class are OPTIONAL
Automatic indexing is the Mount Everest of court reporting, the high plateau that everyone wants to attain, but which seems so impossible to many. It is a big feature simply because it is a big topic. Why? Because there are so many different kinds of indexes that reporters use. In order to accommodate all those different looks and styles, the auto indexing feature has a lot of wingspan. But it’s not impossible. Far from it, as Steve will show you in this nuts and bolts seminar. Look at it this way. You can sit with Steve and learn how to create an automatic index or remain forever destined to typing them up manually and wasting endless hours doing so.

Windows 8: A Big Deal For Realtimers (Technology Track)
By Scott Friend & John Everhart

10:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. • .2 CEUs
Writers for this class are NOT NECESSARY
Many are annoyed. Why a new version of Windows when you’re just getting used to Windows 7? Not only is it easy to use, it means good things for realtime reporters and it’s not so bad for everyone else, either. Here’s why: The touch screen interface now makes it possible for Windows applications to run on tablets and those are all in high demand these days. Everybody wants one and none of them run any of the software we use in the legal or reporting professions; our programs are all Windows-based. Now you’ll be able to run Eclipse, Bridge, LiveNote, CaseViewNet, Summation, and any other Windows program on a tablet. Not only that, the new Windows tablets will have more powerful processors, more memory, and faster hard drives than the iPads or Android devices. And the new touch-screen interface is very nice and easy to use.

By Sunny Hann & Phil Harris

1:30 – 3:30 p.m. • .2 CEUs
Writers for this class are NOT NECESSARY
LiveNote continues to improve the lives of realtime reporters everywhere. But most reporters typically see only one piece of the puzzle, the part they connect to when they hook up with attorneys. Used by 81 percent of the top 200 U.S. law firms, LiveNote is the realtime component in a much larger constellation of interconnected litigation support services, all provided by Thomson Reuters. Join Sunny Hann, Customer Care Manager for RealLegal, and Phil Harris, Director of Partner Programs as they share market research on why attorneys buy realtime as they show you—live and in action—how to connect over wireline networks using LiveNote and over the Internet using LiveNote Stream. LiveNote now uses the Bridge protocol so your corrections appear instantly on the attorneys’ screens. Sunny will also zero in on the tools attorneys use when they work with the software and how it fits into their post‐realtime galaxy of litigation‐support solutions.

Ever wonder what all those instant messaging and texting acronyms and initialisms stand for? Do you know what an emoticon is? Marybeth will test your knowledge on the most commonly used instant messaging and texting acronyms and initialisms, and we’ll have some fun with emoticons. If you have kids, then you need to know the ones your kids are using! No kids? How about the Top 50 acronyms used in business texting? Do you know what each of these stand for: 182, *$, 9 or 99? If not, then this seminar is a must for you.
